John Pierce St. John served as the eighth governor of Kansas from 1879-1882. An avowed opponent of liquor, he strongly supported legislative action to provide constitutional prohibition for Kansas. He served two terms as Governor and was defeated in his bid for re-election to a third term in 1882 by the Democratic candidate, George W. Glick.
